Collect and analyze user analysis data collection for at least 5 users
- Choose at least one method: Interviews, questionnaires, direct observations, focus groups
A questionnaire was distributed to five individuals who currently subscribe to the Legislative Update.
- Provide a summary of the data
Our data shows the following:
- 40% of users view the Update on their mobile devices
- 60% of users are unclear about the purpose of the left side navigation links 50% of users don’t feel like the links lead them towards relevant enough content.
- 60% of users seek additional information about the articles yet there aren’t links to this information.
- 40% of users do not know what they are supposed to do with the information in the Updates once they have read it
- 100% of users indicate that they are unclear as to what will happen to their comments after they are submitted via the comment box at the bottom of the page
- 100% of users refer to the Archives to reread previous articles
- 40% of users indicate that the content in the Update is not what they expect to see
- 80% of users believe the information presented in the Update is confusing and difficult to read
- 100% of users are unsatisfied with the layout of the Update
- 100% of users agree that the absence of breadcrumbs makes it difficult for the user to know where the are in the site at any given time.
- Create at least 3 detailed personas that include the minimal information below:
- Small business owner (UM alum) who opened his business with the help of the University of Missouri Business Development program. He also hires UM grads and wants to keep tabs on the UM system for information that might impact his business or hiring practices.
- Goals:
Wants to be updated when the Govenor of Missouri visits the campus.
Wants to keep tabs on information that could impact his business.
- When, where, and frequency of the user interactions:
Once a month, sometimes more during the legislative session since he’s friends with a Missouri state representative. Users smartphone is the preferred choice to UM legislative update. He has it on his person at all times. Since he travels around frequently spending time at a computer to probably look on the website is not a priority.
- Preferences:
He uses his smartphone fequentally and uses a laptop at home.
- If applicable, visual or physical disabilities:
The user has prescription eyeglasses because he is nearsighted.
- Age or age range: 50-59
- Frustrations, likes, dislikes:
This user is frustrated with the amount of information that is presented to him all at once. There is no way to parse what information is the most relevant or important. He is also annoyed by the fact that he can’t easily view the information on his iPhone as the information isn’t properly formatted.
- A faculty member who is a researcher for public policy
- Goals:
To find information about local and state policies that affect the University Missouri
- When, where, and frequency of the user interactions:
Once a week during the Missouri State legislative session. During the school semesters twice a week during her class time.
- Preferences:
Due to her disability she prefers to read the information from the website on a desktop computer.
- If applicable, visual or physical disabilities:
This faculty member is legally blind. The user relies on a screen reader technology to help decipher the information that is presented on the UM Legislative Update.
- Age or age range: 40-49
- Frustrations, likes, dislikes:
This person is frustrated by the layout of the site’s navigation links to important state and federal officials. Links go to general homepages of the governmental office and not specific people who represent Missouri. This user then has to search throughout each site to find out who the proper representative is before she can contact him/her.
- A Mizzou student that interns at the Capitol building
- Goals:
To get a leg up on information that happens during the legislative session
- When, where, and frequency of the user interactions:
Once a week during the Missouri State legislative session. And sometimes goes over the same articles a number of times to remember the information.
- Preferences:
Prefers to read the website on a laptop. This user is unable to afford a smartphone or a tablet.
- If applicable, visual or physical disabilities:
No physical or visual disabilities
- Age or age range: 20-30
- Frustrations, likes, dislikes:
User dislikes not being able to know if their comments are being read or looked at. The user likes the idea of looking at other people’s comments and thoughts about the legislative day’s events.
